20 Jun 08 Getting started with the Editor


Creating a DITA Project

  1. Select the File > New > Project… menu
  2. In the DITA category choose DITA Project
  3. Click on the Next button
  4. Enter your project name
  5. Click on the Finish button

You can then import existing DITA files from your file system, using the file import wizard or drag and dropping them from your Windows Explorer window into your DITA project.

You can also start creating new DITA Files into your DITA Project.


Creating DITA Files

  1. Right-click on your DITA Project and select the New > Other… menu
  2. In the DITA category choose the type of DITA file you wish to create
  3. Click on the Next button
  4. Choose a file name
  5. Click on the Finish button
The newly created file is automatically opened in the corresponding editor


Setting up the DITA Open Toolkit

To create DITA-OT launch configurations you first need to specify where the toolkit is installed. If you do not have already a working installation of the toolkit, we recommend you install the “full and easy” package.
  1. Select the Window > Preferences… menu
  2. Select the DITA > Open Toolkit preference page
  3. Click on the Browse… button
  4. Navigate the folder where your installation of the DITA-OT is located (the “full and easy” package is recommended if you do not have already a working installation)
  5. Click the Open button
  6. Click the OK button


Creating a DITA Open Toolkit launch configuration

  1. Select the Run > External Tools > Open External Tools Dialog… menu
  2. Right-click on the DITA-OT Build category
  3. Select the New menu
  4. Enter a name for your configuration
  5. Enter a transformation type (xhtml, pdf, etc.)
  6. Enter the location of the DITA Map you wish to process
  7. Enter the location for the generated output
  8. Optional: Enter the location of a ditaval processing profile
  9. Optional: Provide additional processing arguments
  10. Click on the Run button
Once you ran it once, the configuration is available either under the Run > External Tools menu or with the Run External Tools button in the tool bar.
